Hello Parents and Students,
My name is Jeff Varden and this year will be my twenty second year of teaching in the Northshore School District. I have been a Northshore teacher my entire career and twenty-one of them have all been right here at Canyon Park Middle School. Here's a little background about how I got here. I am a 1989 graduated of Lindbergh High School in Renton, WA. From there I headed off to play soccer for Green River Community College in Auburn where I earned my Associate of Arts degree. Central Washington University, in Ellensburg, was my next destination where I was recruited to play soccer and ultimately pursue my degree in education. I graduated from Central earning my Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a major in Physical Education and a Special Education minor. I was hired the following school year right hear at CPMS. That fall I met my wife of sixteen years at a Halloween party. We reside right here in the great city of Bothell, and have two wonderful children. One is a sixth grader here at Canyon Park and the other is a freshman at Bothell High. Several years into my career, while my son was one, I made a crazy decision to go back to school and earned a Masters Degree in Integrated Technology in Education from City University. It was tough times and not very smart planning on my part!
I became a Health and Fitness teacher because growing up I loved playing all kinds of sports and found out later how much I enjoyed working with kids. My fondness for working with kids started back in community college when I was a summer camp counselor for the King County Parks and Recreation Department. I came back to my camp counselor position year after year while I was in college because I had such a wonderful experience every summer working with them and it gave me a sense of pride and accomplishment that I was contributing in the lives of others. Another factor that reinforced my passion to help kids was volunteering in my moms High School Special Education classroom where she worked as a para-educator. I would work in her room when I came home for college vacations. Everyday my decision to become a teacher is reinforced by the wonderful students and staff I work with here at CPMS. GO KNIGHTS!
It is my honor to be working with your child and I hope together we can make it a successful year for them.
